Everyone loves their family. Even though they drive them insane and pester them and are constantly in their business, it doesn't matter. Deep down we love it and know that they do everything they do out of love for us. That's what I love about my family. No matter what happens they are always there for you in the worst of situations. They comfort you, coddle you, support you, encourage you, and sometimes kick your ass in gear. We get frustrated with them and say we hate them or feel embarrassed, but that's just part of being a family. Poor communication skills. Every family has that one! My life is my family. And they will always come first in my life.
Then there are those family members that you despise no matter what and believe the best thing for them is to go to Alaska and never come back. Yes. We all have those relatives too. The relatives that have fallen out of touch and that animosity and anger follow their names. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about them. I have an aunt and an uncle like this. And today was one of those splendid days where I found out just how much I don't love them.
Here's the picture: My uncle is my dad's older brother. He married my aunt. He's a dentist and she works in his office. They have no kids. They are rich. They have two houses. They love golf and would rather spend time in Florida with their rich, snobby friends. They belong to a country club (and practically run it). And they care about nothing and no one bu themselves. My grandmother was the only thing that kept them around. Now that she's gone all of that has changed.
When my grandmother passed, she split her inheritance 50/50 with my dad and my uncle. Now, my parents want to go through the house and keep things and save things for my sister and me. My aunt and uncle just want to get rid of everything and then escape. My family has been working on cleaning out the house, but it's not easy. We are always busy. My dad works five days a week and is on call some weekends. My mom works perdeium. Her coworker's daughter just died and my mom has now gone working two days a week to five days a week. She is exhausted. My sister is away at school. I go to school four days a week, work Tuesday and Thursday and work the weekends. Friday is my one day off and I like to sleep a little. Like I said, we are busy. And now a days that is the typical American family. My aunt and uncle are not the typical American family.
My mom gets a phone call from my aunt today about the house and everything. I have never seen my mom get off the phone more livid than she did this afternoon. My aunt wants everything to be done ASAP. Like this Friday. She wants us to pull out everything we want so these people can go through the house and get it ready for showing. My aunt doesn't have a Realtor set up and such and thinks the house will sell fast. What world is she living in? It's getting close to the holidays and the economy and housing market suck. She then is pestering my mom about selling a chair that my mom and dad bought for my grandfather years and years ago. My mom nearly blew a gasket and plans on giving the chair to one of her friends. My aunt and uncle want to sell everything that has a thread of value to it. My mom would rather give it away. We are the people who could use money and yet we don't care if we give the furniture away or sell it.
My aunt and uncle want everything done with the house by the time my uncle retires on the 29th of this month. Seriously. Yes. They are delusional.
But here is the clincher to the whole thing. For as long as I can remember, we have always had Thanksgiving over at my aunt and uncle's house with my grandmother. Now that she is gone, my aunt and uncle are "passing" Thanksgiving this year. How un-American can you possibly be? Once everything with the house is over with they will most likely move to Florida with all the other old people and we'll never see them again. I'm not sorry or sad in the least. And I don't feel bad about it. They are no family of mine.
Well. That's my rant for the day. I am glad that my mom's side of the family is actual family. Otherwise life would mos def suck!
